You should not be on the road

Late in the afternoon of Friday, November 14, we were at the large intersection on Swartkoppies Road waiting to turn right into Potgieter Street. The robot was green in both directions of Swartkoppies.

ALBERTON – There was a taxi on our left slightly blocking our view of oncoming traffic. The taxi took a chance and crossed, being narrowly missed by an oncoming vehicle.

My daughter (driving), waited and the white Mercedes behind us started hooting and frantically showing us to go! A truck now pulled up next to us on the left. The robot changed to red and, pulling slightly past the truck to see more clearly, my daughter waited as a speeding vehicle skipped the red robot. Had she gone, this most certainly would have caused a fatal accident. The Mercedes, still behind us, just sat on his hooter waving and cursing hysterically. We turned right and as luck would have it, a large truck with trailer turned into both lanes – we were again forced to stop. The Merc ‘s driver nearly went berserk (he himself had nowhere to pass us). Eventually we got going. This idiot sped up next to us, hooting, turned down his window, swore at us and showed us every rude hand sign in the book, went on and nearly failed to stop at the next red robot (at the Potgieter bridge).

Now, what was this? Stolen or getaway vehicle, road rage, intoxication or just a normal, arrogant driver trying to intimidate others? If he had a true emergency, there are ways to get through the traffic safely by using your emergency lights etc. Sir, did you actually take note of what was happening in front of you, do you realise that you could have had fatalities to your credit had you managed to intimidate or scare us into going when we could not, did you notice that there were young children in our car?

I believe people like Mr. Merc should have their licences suspended for at least a year and be made to do community service, preferably cleaning up at severe accident scenes so that they can witness and experience, first-hand, what happens when you drive like he does. Our road accidents and fatalities will reduce dramatically if people like this are removed from our roads.

Careful and considerate driver
