Problems at the pool can be solved

I was shocked to read of yet another drowning at Alberton's public pool.

ALBERTON – The biggest problem is the pool is too deep. I suggest that the pool be built up so that the deepest side is about 1 or 1.2 metres and the shallow side about 1 metre.

I often visit holiday destinations such as Warmbaths and Badplaas Forever Resorts, and all their swimming pools are shallow so that a grownup can stand anywhere in the pool with his feet on the ground and his head above the water.

The last time I was at the Alberton public pool I noticed that everybody there was in the shallow side anyway and the remaining three quarters pool area unused, which proves that people prefer the safer side.

Instead of closing this facility over weekends, there should be a maximum limit allowing only a certain amount of first arrivals access. Most holiday resorts as well as the Kruger Park restrict the number of daily visitors as overcrowding makes it unpleasant for everybody.

No alcohol, glass items and intoxicated people should be allowed onto the premises, right of admission signs displayed and security should check all bags, cooler boxes etc. when swimmers enter the complex.

SAPS and EMPD already have their hands full, so the municipality should employ personnel or contract a private security firm to restore law and order whose costs can be covered by entrance fees.
