Non-Performance of Ekurhuleni Metro Police Department

Councillor Samantha Nair says the targets set for fines collection is way below the budget and this is unacceptable as it has a negative impact on the metro as a whole.

ALBERTON – “The fines income for 2013/2014 is only R167 705.00 whereas the budget was set on R185 694.00; the collection variance is 10.41 per cent below budget.

“One of the priorities of the Metro Police is law enforcement. The poor performance of the department shows that traffic laws are not being enforced.

“The targets set for law enforcement are so low, and this is the reason we see so many fatal accidents on the roads of Ekurhuleni.

“When we look at the data for 2013/2014 only 341 accidents were recorded and 567 by law infringements attended to.

“When one looks at the serious traffic transgressions most common in Ekurhuleni are drunken driving, seat belt violations, unlicensed drivers, traffic light violations, overloading and public transport violations. This shows that the Metro Police Department are not serious about law enforcement,” she explained in a press release.

When one compares Ekurhuleni and Province targets both are very low and the residents of Ekurhuleni and Gauteng would challenge both these department to improve safety on our roads.

The oversight committee of the DA in Ekurhuleni would like to see the department set more aggressive targets so that road safety can be improved in our metro.
