Celebrate South African heritage with Gold Reef City

Visit Gold Reef City and experience Jozi’s history in three unique ways.

ORMONDE – South Africans celebrate their diversity of cultures, beliefs and traditions on Heritage Day, September 24, alongside tourism month.

This year, do something different and become a tourist in your own backyard. Visit Gold Reef City and experience Jozi’s history in three unique ways.

The gold mine tour

Be transported back in time to an authentic mining town from the 1880s, where you can descend into the depths of an old mine, spend time exploring genuine museum houses, and hover over the river panning for gold in Gold Reef City’s Jozi’s Story of Gold.

This magical trip down memory lane will tell you all about how Johannesburg came into being, how gold was discovered on the reef and how the lives of men and women formed an integral part of a rich and fascinating heritage.

The gold mine, which has an average of 3 500 visitors per day, provides underground tours of the mine as well as gold-pouring demonstrations.

Apartheid Museum

The Apartheid Museum was opened in 2001 and is the spotlight of South Africa’s fight for racial equality.

The remarkable building is designed to resemble the prison-like conditions of Robben Island – a reminder of the apartheid era and what some of the South Africans went through.

Look out for the historic photos about South Africa’s miracle years in the early 1990s, when negotiations led to the first democratic elections on April 27 in 1994. The museum is also filled with interactive displays that include lots of video and film footage.

For anyone wanting to understand and experience the history of apartheid in South Africa, a visit to the Apartheid Museum is fundamental.

The City Sight Seeing Red Bus Tour

The Red City Tour follows a fascinating route through the Johannesburg CBD and explores top attractions in the city, such as Carlton Centre’s 50th floor, Gandhi Square, the Mining District, the World of Beer and historically significant places in the vibrant township of Soweto. With City Sightseeing Joburg buses stopping at Gold Reef City, this is a great place to explore the many attractions of this vibrant and energetic complex.

What better way to celebrate Heritage Day and tourism month than to come to Gold Reef City?

To complete the heritage theme, Gold Reef City is running a competition on their Facebook page. Stand a chance to win a hotel stay, theme park tickets and a tour on the Red Bus. To enter, upload a picture of yourself in your traditional attire onto their page and stand a chance to win.
