SPCA quarantine over

The Alberton SPCA dog section is open

AFTER the distemper outbreak early August and efforts by the Alberton SPCA to clear the dog kennels on Friday August 8, the SPCA discussed the next step.

Alberton SPCA was put on quarantine for a week after the distemper incident and a meeting was discussed on August 18 with all parties concerned including a NSPCA official where it was agreed that a week of the quarantined area was not enough.

The conclusion was that the quarantine would be extended for another week, because according to the Alberton SPCA Manager Kingstone Siziba: “Sometimes the disease is not completely gone.”

“We were very concerned because of the outbreak and the future of other dogs that would be coming in,” he said.

On August 12, the SPCA used product granules in every kennel and in places where the dogs were kept. Employees at the SPCA hosed the granules away on August 13 and applied a disinfectant that would treat the infected areas.

The quarantine is now over, the dogs have been brought back from the Germiston SPCA and the Alberton SPCA has opened their dog section on August 25. The initial distemper could have originated from someone who brought a dog in with the disease.

“We ask that your pets must be vaccinated against all canine diseases,” said Kingstone.

The SPCA are asking for the community to support them so they can build a quarantine section. The general public and business owners could help to supply building materials such as zinc, bricks, cement, etc. “Any building materials will be accepted.”
