Ekurhuleni West College students enjoy internships

Students from EWC recently had the oppertunity to take part in an internship program, thanks to local businesses. The work-based experience is part of their final year mark.

ALBERTON – The internship is part of the SSACI initiative, a directive of the Department of Higher education. This initiative helps a student receive work-based experience, and makes part of their final year mark.

Some of the businesses that were involved were Marko, Wiesenhof Coffee shop at Makro, Mike’s Kitchen, Boston BBQ in Gold Reef City, GDE Meyersdal, and Belchinni Shoes in Alberton City.

The students who were involved were studying Office Admin, Marketing, Hospitality and Finance.

Nthabiseng Mashego was a cadet for one of the intern groups at Makro. She said that the experience was very pleasant. “It was a great experience. The students were always ready and willing to learn. This experience has also helped me to learn, as it showed me what it would be like to take on a management position.”

Mzwandile Ramathibe, a EWC student, was an intern at Makro for a week and had an enjoyable experience. “I am thankful for this great opportunity, the time we spent with Makro uplifted us as students. We were welcomed with open arms, and I would love to be able to work in a great environment like this.”

Veronica Hutton, a lecturer at the Ekurhuleni West College, would like to thank each and every business that was involved with the work-based experience project. “We want to express our gratitude to the management and HR staff off all businesses who hosted our students as interns. Thank you for welcoming our students, and giving them this unique opportunity. It is fantastic to see how people invest in the youth of today, who will ultimately be our country’s future.”

Veronica Hutton would like to invite any company who would be able to host interns next year to contact her on Veronica@EWC.edu.za for more details on how to get involved.
