Substation left open and cables exposed

A Substation box has been left open and the cables exposed in Alberton North.

ALBERTON – The EMM stated that the cables at the corner of 10th avenue and Hendrik Potgieter Road had been fixed and cleaned.

However, the substation was left unattended and open. The back section of the substation had been dug up in an attempt by criminals to steal cables, according to Beverley-Ann Small of Alberton North.

Within the last two months of June and July, an anonymous female resident of the area called the SAPS after she spotted suspects interfering with the fencing of the substation and she noticed them carrying the fence away. On Sunday July 13 there was a power outage in some regions in the area at around 16:00.

Beverley-Ann Small went to investigate to make sure that no one had been fiddling with the cables in 10th Avenue. She checked up on the substation on the corner of Hendrik Potgieter and Marthinus Oosthuizen Avenue. She noticed that the door was open and that the cables were not tampered with.

On July 18 Beverley said that the substation almost caught fire on July 17 due to a veld fire and that the fire department was called out and attended to the matter. The box still remains open and the cables exposed.
