Thokoza residents rampage over electricity

Residents threaten attack the home of the councilor if the problem with electricity persists.

THOKOZA – Residents of Thokoza took to the streets on Monday night July 14 after several consecutive power outages, following a period of discontent over electricity since the beginning of June.

The lack of power has caused havoc for small local businesses which could not operate properly.

It is alleged that the municipality once tried to install new electric meter boxes and the residents refused the installation because it would force them to pay for electricity as they were using it freely.

By switching off electricity the municipality is hoping that the residents will succumb and allow meter box installations. However, it has recently seemed not to be working.

Last night people closed several streets such as Tshabalala, Khumalo, Buthelezi, Monyane, Dube, Mazibuko and Sabi streets, not a allowing any vehicle to pass.

Khumalo Street residents attacked Somali shops, taking all their stock, beating and chasing them away.

Residents were burning tires, and pieces of wood were stacked on the streets, barricading passing vehicles.

All the Somali shops in Khumalo are next to the Mshayazafe hostel is closed today.

Residents  have said they will attack the home of the councilor if this problem persists.

The RECORD is currently investigating these allegations.
