Spur Assault: A deadly assault revealed

The Spur granted the RECORD access to the CCTV footage recording the fatal incident claiming 20-year-old Bradley du Preez's life on Sunday, June 22.

ALBERTON – Before the footage was viewed, one of the managers at the Spur told the RECORD that Bradley had been at the Spur for a while before the table of six arrived. Bradley was sitting at a table that is not visible on the CCTV footage.

“There was no-one else in the smoking section where they were all seated, so it is not known what was said between the two parties,” the manager said.

Viewing the footage, it is clear that there was a minor incident before the actual fight. Although there is no sound to the CCTV footage, one can see tension between Bradley and the group. At this stage no Spur staff were involved.

“There was no-one else in the smoking section where they were all seated, so it is not known what was said between the two parties.”

Bradley is still sitting at his table. A man sitting at the table with the six suspects threw a rib bone in Bradley’s direction. Bradley reacted to the bone that was thrown at him. He stood up and approached the table of six.

Before Bradley reached the table, one of the six got up and pushed him. A scuffle started and Spur waiters intervened, breaking up the fight before anything serious happened. The parties involved took their seats.

According to a waiter, Bradley was on his way out. He had already paid his bill. It was on his way out of the smoking section, when he threw a half-filled beer glass in the direction of the six suspects.

Two of the suspects got up from the table and the fights started. They were then joined by the other two male members, while the females remained seated. Waiters and managers of the Spur, still in the smoking section, tried to break up the fight.

A scuffle started and Spur waiters intervened, breaking up the fight before anything serious happened. The parties involved took their seats.

According to Spur staff, Bradley fell to his haunches. He was unconscious. Staff members who have first-aid training checked his pulse and he was still alive. Spur management then locked the doors and the suspects were not allowed to leave before the police arrived.

The mall security had been alerted to the situation and phoned the police as well as Fox security.

A source has informed the RECORD that numerous narcotics were found in a car used by the six suspects. The police are still investigating and could not confirm this to the press.

The two female suspects did not get involved in the physical fight, but according to some of the waiters on duty, they were verbally abusive towards them.

Brett Milligan the Little Eagle Spur owner said that he has the highest respect for his staff, who did everything in their power to try and prevent this tragedy.

The six accused are expected to appear at the Palm Ridge Court on Friday June 27.

The footage is not available for public viewing because it is part of the court evidence.
