Lack of funding leaves Alberton Caregivers struggling to make ends meet

Alberton Caregivers kindly ask the community to help the organisation with adult diapers, food and toiletry donations.

Founded by Marcelle Schwarze in 2021, Alberton Caregivers has been serving the community for over two years, providing a beacon of hope to many Alberton residents.

Alberton Caregivers offers a loving, safe, and protected environment for seniors who cannot afford an old-age home.

They provide home-based care for families who work and cannot afford to put their loved ones in a care facility or retirement home.

According to Marcelle Schwarze of the Alberton Caregivers, part of the services offered by the Alberton Caregivers is to give families abroad peace of mind, knowing there are dedicated, passionate, and caring staff looking after their elderly parents and even grandparents.

“Many of these families live overseas and are unable to physically care for their loved ones,” she said.

Alberton Caregivers’ services extend beyond home care. They assist with hospital discharges, accompany elders to doctor appointments, and provide wound care.

Each caregiver brings their unique expertise and experience to ensure the best possible care.

Schwarze’s passion for helping the elderly began in April 2021, when she saw a heart breaking story on Facebook about an abused and neglected elderly lady, sparking her desire to make a difference.

Schwarze said her goal is to do more than just home-based care.

“We want to establish a care facility for homeless, abandoned, and neglected senior citizens, providing them with a safe, healthy, and stable home.”

However, Alberton Caregivers faces significant challenges. Funding is scarce, making it difficult to provide healthy meals for their elderly citizens.

Registration with the medical board is also essential to help seniors with medical aid, although their primary focus remains assisting Sassa pensioners.

The organization urgently needs donations, particularly for adult diapers. They are costly and not part of a Sassa pensioner’s budget. Food and toiletry donations are also welcome.
