Miss earth contestant involved in planting and clean up initiative

Thembi Mathebula from Palmridge is a third-year BA student at Wits and a passionate advocate for environmental issues and social justice.

Thembi is a Miss Earth advocate and has used the initiative to make a change where she can. She is driven to make a difference, especially for marginalised communities who bear the brunt of environmental degradation.

“When I discovered Miss Earth South Africa, I was initially hesitant, thinking it was just another pageant but I was wrong. Miss Earth is a powerful platform where women become the change they want to see. I’m honoured to be a part of it.

“As a township girl, I never thought I’d have the opportunity to make a difference on a larger scale. Miss Earth South Africa has shown me I don’t need wealth or power to create change. I can utilise my resources, my voice and my passion to make a real impact,” said Thembi.

“As a Miss Earth South Africa finalist I’m honoured to work with UNICEF on our first-ever Green Rising and Restore Project. This initiative marks a significant milestone in our efforts to promote environmental education and community-led conservation, inspiring a new generation of eco-warriors to take action and make a positive impact.

“Working with UNICEF volunteers and the Green Campus initiative Gauteng team we have worked with schools and communities in the south of Johannesburg and around SA.

“My vision is to empower marginalised schools and communities through sustainable development and environmental stewardship. To achieve this, I aim to establish Eco-Hubs in disadvantaged areas, serving as vibrant centres for education, growth, and community engagement.”
