DEOPR launches its hyperbaric oxygen chamber

Residents of DEOPR welcome new medical technology.

The Directorate Enforcing Older Persons Rights (DEOPR) Caring and Frail Facility in The Hill hosted the launch of its hyperbaric oxygen chamber on August 10.

ā€œThe facility is only one service available to its residents. After the facility was almost shut down in 2021, having such a revolutionary piece of medical technology is a testament to how DEOPR has bounced back,ā€ said Hennie Else, CEO of DEOPR.

According to Solid O2, the company that manufactures the chamber it provides oxygen therapy, which allows a person to breathe 95% pure oxygen through an oxygen mask while they are in a mildly pressurised chamber.

The pressure inside the chamber is higher than the normal atmospheric pressure. The pressurised environment, combined with medical grade, high flow rate oxygen, allows the body to absorb more oxygen than normal.

More oxygen absorption promotes an accelerated healing rate, reduces inflammation, and stimulates the growth of new blood vessels and nerve endings.

Els spoke about how helpful the chamber will be to the residents who suffer from a variety of illnesses.

ā€œOxygen therapy reduces the rate at which cancer cells spread; it helps with seizures and strokes. I think it is medicine made easy,ā€ Els said.

ā€œAfter we took over the facility and made necessary changes, residents received better care.

ā€œWe raised funds to acquire this chamber, as many residents can benefit from oxygen therapy. We have six trained caregivers who passed an exam on how to use the chamber and they will operate the system for us,ā€ he continued.
