Schools participate in Eskom Expo Science for Young Scientists competition
The top-performing learners progress to the Eskom Expo International Science Fair, which will be held from September 23 to 27 at Emperors Palace.
Some 27 schools in the Ekurhuleni district participated in the Eskom Expo Ekurhuleni Regional Science Fair competition held in the Dinwiddie Hall, Germiston on August 3.
The day saw the schools showcase brilliant and creative projects that blew away those at the fair.
Brackenhurst Primary, Royal Schools Sky City, St Declan School for boys, Palmridge Primary School and Glenview Primary School were among those that had the opportunity to showcase their learners’ innovative projects.
“This year’s expo process saw a surge in participation and engagement as learners from across the district competed in district-level expos. These events served as rigorous selection platforms for the regional competition, pushing young minds to excel through dedicated project work, intensive training sessions, and mentorship programmes.
“The district is brimming with pride as its brightest young talents prepare to compete at an international stage of the competition,” said Palesa Selepe, the regional director of Eskom Expo for Young Scientists.
The expo fosters young people’s enthusiasm for science, invention, and creativity.
The regional science fairs are an essential part of this platform, where inspiring scientists showcase their ground-breaking research projects and discoveries.
The day saw impressive projects and experiments crafted by the talented youth of the region. The students’ extraordinary efforts demonstrated their commitment to their projects, and it was evident they had invested many hours in their projects.
To recognise this, the expo handed awards to learners, schools, and teachers to encourage them to keep participating in the competition.
Ishaan Hari and Dhruu Mangla from St Declans School for Boys won the best senior scientist award (shared trophy) for their project MAHA the Green Mower.
Daniella Anikpeh and David Mkaronda from St Francis College and Leano Nkabinde Nombuso Ncube from Royal School Sky City were among the learners whose projects were recognised by the Tshwane University of Technology (TUT).
The four learners received the TUT motivation award in recognition of impressive scientific concepts as identified by TUT.
A few learners from St Francis College, Laerskool Leondale Parallel Medium School, and the Katlehong Engineering School of Specialisation were awarded the Eskom Expo special awards.
St Francis College learner Kagiso Mashego took home the best energy award for his project titled Bio-Energy.
Fanelesibinge Ndhlovu from Laerskool Leondale Parallel Medium School got the best female award for her project titled Electricity-Generating Wind Turbine.
Lerato Mahlangu a Lekoatsi Nkhatho from the Katlehong Engineering School of Specialisation won the best development award.
Vuyo Ntambo and Lindokuhle Bhila from the Katlehong Engineering School of Specialisation won the Best Innovation award.
