Do not leave children unsupervised

Renegades Search and Rescue, an NPO that helps families and the police find missing persons, sends a strong message to parents and guardians.

Renegades Search and Rescue’s Dawn Gounden says leaving children unsupervised can have grave consequences and risks their safety and well-being.

Young children are naturally curious and impulsive, which can lead them to engage in risky behaviours when left unsupervised.

Without a responsible adult present to guide and protect them, Gounden says children might not be able to make safe decisions.

“This can result in accidents, injuries, or even harm from strangers who might take advantage of their vulnerability. Furthermore, unsupervised children might be more susceptible to emotional and psychological harm. Without a caregiver nearby to provide support and reassurance, children may experience feelings of fear, anxiety and loneliness,” she says.

According to Gounden, these negative emotions can have long-term effects on their mental health and development.

“Unsupervised children are at a higher risk of encountering dangerous situations such as bullying, abuse or exploitation. It is adults’ responsibility to ensure the safety and well-being of children under their care,” she said.
