Conflicting feedback surfaces amid sinking road surface

Motorists and Mayberry Park residents desperately need intervention to have the subsiding road repaired.

There are growing calls from concerned locals to have the busy JG Strydom Street in Mayberry Park repaired due to its gradual collapse and subsequent deterioration.

JG Strydom and Koorsboom streets in Mayberry Park have visible signs of a sinking road surface.

The inner portion of JG Strydom Street caved in, making it almost impossible for two vehicles to cross this busy road at the same time. Traffic moves on the wrong side of the road to try and avoid the worst affected side.

The portion reportedly has a Rand Water pipeline passing beneath, thus damaging vehicles and municipal infrastructure.

Ward 94 Clr Samantha Nair said this was a hazard waiting to strike because this is a busy road, and not all motorists know of this situation.

Clr Samantha Nair points to a portion that is slowly but surely collapsing.

“Those who might come into the area in the early or late hours and don’t know about this sinkhole, and their cars get damaged. We no longer find joy in using these roads. This has been ongoing for quite some time. If they could assist us, we would be glad,” said Mayberry Park resident Gwababa Malindi.

After the Alberton Record’s continuous correspondence with Rand Water, the entity electronically stated that it does not have existing construction work at the mentioned site.

However, Nair said she was informed by one of the senior officials that repair work will start soon at the affected road.

“I can’t understand why we are receiving two conflicting feedbacks. This road will cause somebody to lose their life if nothing is nothing is done urgently. I’m pleading for Rand Water to come and resolve this problem,” she said.
