Sibonile School raises awareness on eye care

The Mall of the South supports eye care awareness together with Sibonile School for the Visually Impaired

Eye Care Awareness Month is from September 21 to October 18 and raises awareness about the importance of eye health, emphasizing the prevention and treatment of avoidable blindness.

Sibonile School for the Visually Impaired celebrated their Eye Care Awareness Day on October 20 with activities such as education on eye care awareness, learners’ marimba and dance performances and an empathetic experience: the blindfolded walk.

The event began with informative sessions where guests learnt about various aspects of eye care. Experts shared insights about maintaining good vision and preventing eye-related issues.

Orientation and mobility practitioner Lwandisa Davids, SID educator Thembani Manyane and school principal Lindiwe Emily Mlungu.

The learners showcased their skills through marimba performances and dancing. Their vibrancy added an element of celebration and creativity to the event, and a highlight was the empathetic experience offered to the guests.

They were blindfolded and given walking canes, allowing them to step into the shoes of visually impaired individuals. Each participant had a guide who helped them navigate various obstacles, providing a firsthand experience of life without sight.

The event fostered a deeper understanding of the challenges faced by visually impaired individuals while emphasizing the importance of regular eye care.

The school held an exhibition on October 21 at the Mall of the South to showcase the services the visually impaired learners do, such as knitting, sewing and arts and crafts and educated shoppers on eye care awareness.
