Paddling enthusiasts embark on Canoe Race at Rietvlei Dam

Annual 9 Miler Canoe Race showcases thrilling paddling action at Rietvlei Dam on July 22.

Paddling enthusiasts from Gauteng gathered at Rietvlei Dam on July 22 for the annual 9 Miler Canoe Race.

Hosted by the Centurion Canoe Club (CCC), the event drew participants from various clubs and backgrounds to showcase their paddling prowess.

The day warmed up despite a chilly star. Paddlers enjoyed the peaceful scenic countryside bordering the Rietvlei reserve as they paddled laps around the course to make up the nine miles. The long course was an 18.5km race, and for those not fit enough, there was a short course challenge of 12.2km.

Bert Matruje from the canoe club based at Wemmer Pan (Johannesburg Canoe Club) partnered with a Sowetan club paddler, Phola Mnyande, to take on the challenge and finished 10th in Double K2 at a time of 1:30.

The next canoe race planned for Gauteng will take place at Florida Lake Canoe Club in Roodepoort.
