Group aims to make things happen in Alberton

As a community organisation founded last October, Alberton Become One United Town (ABOUT) serves as a catalyst for change in Alberton.

The town’s residents were frustrated by the council’s poor service delivery and the lack of communication from the ward councillors. It has since formed a committee headed by a local resident Michael Hume.

Hume said that individuals in the council have helped with some cases, but the general state of the town remains a concern.

“If action is not taken soon, the once-great town will become irreparable,” he said.

ABOUT’s concerns were communicated to council through a memorandum of understanding on November 19, 2022. The memorandum is a legally binding document and was received and signed by various members of council.

“Unfortunately, we have received no formal response from the parties involved within the agreed upon 21 days,” Hume said.

In the immediate future, ABOUT aims to get clarity on pressing issues such as the Funny Farm relocation, the Heidelberg waste transfer station and the ongoing decay of municipal infrastructure such as substations and sewage systems.

“We are calling on the metro to clean our town, cut the grass and ensure our environment is well-kept,” he explained.

ABOUT was involved in other community-based projects, such as clean-ups, and they thank everyone who contributed.

“We need people willing to help fix our town, give constructive criticism and attend public meetings.”
