Mayor Phalatse, MMC for GCSS launch manufacturing of City’s Red Fleet Print

The Red Fleet will be manufactured locally.

The Mayor of the City of Johannesburg, Mpho Phalatse, and MMC for Group Corporate and Shared Services, Leah Knott, launched the start of manufacturing of the City’s Red Fleet on January 16.

The event was held in Centurion, where specialised fire and rescue vehicles will be manufactured.

The city’s group corporate and shared services led an open competitive tender process for the supply and delivery of fire and rescue vehicles for the City of Johannesburg’s Emergency Management Services (EMS), which means more effective responses to fire and rescue incidents.

The tender was recommended for award to Marće Projects Pty Ltd, following the finalisation of tender processes.
A total of 17 specialised vehicles will be delivered to the city over the next year.

“We are excited to formally announce that the process to equip the city with more fire and rescue vehicles has kicked off. Our Red Fleet will be manufactured locally, which will directly contribute to the country’s economic recovery and growth,” said Phalatse.

The City of Joburg currently has 31 fire stations servicing its seven regions. The EMS handles more than 250 000 calls a year, making it one of the biggest emergency services units in Africa.

“On behalf of the city, I would like to thank the teams and volunteers across our emergency services for showing up, day in and day out, to take care of our residents and communities,” noted Phalatse.

The city has also secured a three-year contract for the Red Fleet repair and maintenance which commenced in March last year and expires in February 2025.

Knott added, “The multi-party government is committed to tender processes that meet the highest standards for clean and honest governance. That has been our promise to the residents of Joburg.”
