City claims meter was never blocked

The City of Ekurhuleni says the visually impaired local’s prepaid meter shows no record of being blocked.

Raceview’s visually impaired resident, Christo de Klerk, said feedback from the City of Ekurhuleni is untrue when it comes to claiming that his prepaid meter has no record of being blocked.

He demanded a lasting solution after having his prepaid meter periodically blocked for at least every month since last year.

De Klerk, who uses assistive devices that require electricity, said when their electricity meter is blocked, they cannot purchase electricity units. Ward 106 Clr Tim Denny has since been involved in getting his meter unblocked.

De Klerk reiterated that the response the city received was untrue.

“Tim can testify how many times over the past year I have asked him to intervene. He repeatedly contacted an official from the city and then miraculously my meter got unblocked. I bought power via a banking app and the app responded that the meter was blocked,” he said.

He said it is also not true that he only wanted the prepaid meter unblocked to purchase electricity.

“About three weeks ago was the first time I bought electricity in more than three years. I needed the meter unblocked during that time to check my balance and to monitor the effectiveness of my solar system,” de Klerk said.

The response according to de Klerk is simply a denial of responsibility and a cover-up of the municipal madness. He said if they claim not to have a record of his issue, it reflects on their poor record keeping.

City’s spokesperson Zweli Dlamini said: “The meter was not blocked at all, and there is no record showing the meter was blocked. The only problem the customer experienced was the loading of electricity in the meter. An electrician was dispatched to visit the customer and his meter is working. He can buy electricity.”
