City of Ekurhuleni works tirelessly to fix regular waste collection

The City of Ekurhuleni has been having waste collection issues. The city works hard to get to the bottom of this.

The Department of Waste and Sanitation is making progress in alleviating the backlog of refuse removal throughout the City of Ekurhuleni.

The department is also looking into allegations of internal sabotage that has led to vehicles “breaking down” soon after repairs.

MMC for the environment and waste management Andre du Plessis said that the city is pleased to report that 90% of residents now receive efficient waste collection, even though there is still a scarcity of vehicles doing collections in the areas as a result of repeated breakdowns.

“As a long-term solution, the option of introducing a full maintenance lease for the fleet to better deal with any breakdowns and expedite turnaround times to mitigate delays in service delivery is being explored,” said du Plessis.

A tracking sheet that will help convey system delays and their causes has been made available to waste depot managers.

These live sheets are distributed to the public by local council members.

Due to the breakdown in the waste management chain, MMC du Plessis sincerely apologised to the residents and has pledged to keep them informed on a regular basis.
