Joburg South celebrates Women’s Month

Johannesburg south residents celebrated the strength of women and the important role that all South African women play in the country

Johannesburg South residents celebrated Women’s Month in classical style with an entertaining and intimate lunch at the South Hills Recreation Centre with good music and great food hosted by Peter J Bens.

With the high levels of GBV in South Africa, Sergeant Lucky Mabizela was invited to speak at the event.

He encouraged women to speak out and report any case of GBV. He also encouraged women in the South to create a forum for serve as a platform for women to express themselves.

“We don’t want women to think that it’s normal for a woman to be beaten. The women of South Africa should be proud of their work ethic, accomplishments and expertise in prioritising and by this I mean ‘juggling’.

“Get rid of the notion of work-life balance because it doesn’t exist,” he said.

“Accept the reality of work-life trade-offs. Get reliable support both at home and at work if you are under strain,” he said.

“We were encouraging women to get up and do something for themselves. We want to see women making a difference in their communities. We also want them to report any acts of abuse to their nearest police stations,” said Bens.

It was agreed by community members that Women’s Day will be celebrated at the South Hills Recreation Centre and will be marked to promote equal opportunities and rights for women.
