Anglo American hands over vegetation to Glenview

Anglo American recently made a donation to Glenview Primary School to contribute to the school’s garden.

Anglo American handed over numerous trees and vegetable plants to Glenview Primary School following the launch of its phase two programme.

On July 22, Anglo American, in collaboration with Minister of Basic Education Angie Motshekga, launched the second phase of its education programme in the country.

Anglo American invested R500m for phase one and committed over half a billion rands for phase two.

This phase will have an additional focus on Information, Communication and Technology (ICT) and after-school activities like food gardening as part of the programme.

The launch event was adorned with numerous plants including lemon trees and vegetable plants to bring in the food gardening element that is part of phase two. Anglo American donated these lemon trees and vegetable plants to Glenview Primary to contribute to the school’s garden.

Thandiwe Mtshazo, a Grade Seven teacher said: “A huge thank you to Anglo American for their generous donation. We are grateful that they have chosen our school as the school of their choice. We plan to plant these trees and the vegetable plants, which our leaders and learners will oversee and we will set up a vegetable garden which will benefit our feeding scheme”.

Nolitha Fakude, chairperson of Anglo American’s management board in South Africa said their partnerships with the Department of Basic Education and stakeholders are fundamental to the success of the programme and the transformational impact they can have as a responsible business.

“By doubling our investment and targeting specific outcomes, we are going far beyond simply acknowledging the fundamental right of every child to quality education, we are making it happen. Supporting access to better education and school infrastructure, creating sustainable jobs, and contributing to brighter and healthier futures is one of the many ways we are delivering a lasting positive contribution, supporting communities to thrive beyond the life of our mines,” she said.
