WATCH: Runaway fire destroys six bedrooms in South Hills

Three weeks later the families are still waiting for the flats to be fixed.

Two families were left stranded when a runaway fire destroyed the top parts of the flats in Usutu Court, South Hills on June 29.

Six bedrooms and two bathrooms were damaged by the fire, which started in a garage adjacent to Victor Morris’ flat.

Lyn Shi who lives with her father said there was a popping sound in the garage before the fire started.
The cause of the fire is still unknown.

“When the fire started people came to help. I also took out my pensioned father to safety. We called the fire engine, however, it took a long to come. Two fire engines pitched without water and the third came with water but it was a little too late.

“Now we are left stranded. I am unemployed and living with my father, so it is difficult to make ends meet. I appeal for help from the community because we lost most of our belongings in the fire. We need to still guard what is left,” she said.

Morris said the flats still belong to the council and they promised to fix them. “We are still waiting – three weeks later. We are told that they are waiting for quotations before fixing it,” he said.

The bathroom is in ruins after the fire.

Shi can be contacted on 067 114 2049 or contact Charmaine Chetty who has been helping them on 072 950 4227.

The community helped with the mop-up after the fire.
