Councillor calls for urgent intervention to restore Alberton Dam

Ward 37 councillor Ivan Naidoo has shifted his attention to the Alberton Dam in light of reports of pollution degrading the water.

The Alberton Dam is officially part of Ward 37 councillor Ivan Naidoo’s Integrated Development Plan to restore the dam to its normality.

This according to Naidoo part of the City of Ekurhuleni (CoE) back-to-basics approach.

Following numerous complaints from locals, Naidoo has since committed to taking measures to curb pollution that has plagued the community’s much-loved Alberton Dam.

An investigation is underway to possibly find out the underlying cause of the pollution of the dam.

“I’m aware of the issues happening at Alberton Dam. This is a public space where residents come out to have fun and as a time of relaxation, however, the state of the dam has deteriorated. It’s quite an eyesore,” said Naidoo.

He said one contributing factor is pollution in terms of littering while the other is water pollution.

“If you walk around, you’ll find plastic bottles on the edges of the dam. Two sewers are overflowing into the dam. We are looking at investigating the pollution because we think chemicals are flowing into the water.”

Naidoo admittedly reiterated that getting the dam to its normality was going to take a bit of work and time.
He said he has escalated the issue of the dam to the CoE.

“This is a beautiful public space, there are facilities for children to play and braai areas, we don’t want to take that away from our community,” Naidoo said.
