Netcare Clinton Hospital’s talented star emerges in basketball

Netcare Clinton Hospital switchboard operator Simphiwe Mntambo was recently appointed to two more positions in South Africa’s national wheelchair basketball teams.

Netcare Clinton Hospital’s switchboard operator and assistant coach, Simphiwe Mntambo, is making great strides in his sporting career.

Months before leaving for Thailand after his national u-23 men’s wheelchair basketball team qualified for the world cup, Mntambo has made another step of progress.

He was recently given two more positions of being national women’s senior team coach and u-25 women’s squad assistant coach. These well-deserved positions will afford him an opportunity to share his sporting experience with promising young team members.

Mntambo’s interest in wheelchair basketball developed rapidly from an early age. He began playing the sport when he was only in Grade Seven.

The wheelchair basketball star with international sporting experience then began his coaching career with KwaZulu-Natal Warriors, coaching them for three years.

“I was stunned upon being told about this last week after our meeting. I appreciate the opportunity and will be working with the head coach from United States as his assistant coach. I’m willing to learn a lot from him,” he said.

After moving to Gauteng, Mntambo said he joined the Gauteng Lionesses ladies’ team, which is a team he coaches locally.

“I then formed the male team, which is called Amajuba Buffaloes, and we are looking forward to playing on the Supersport log and our aim for this year is to reach semi-finals. In wheelchair basketball you get to know your teammates, and you have to understand and support each other’s strengths,” he explained.

He told the RECORD that he was in need of sponsorship for Buffaloes. Should anyone be willing to assist, you may contact Mntambo on 084 791 3196 or 082 438 2746.
