A message for all women

Ward 57 councillor Faeeza Chame says women need to celebrate themselves.

Here are my best wishes to you on Women’s Day.

Wishing a very happy Women’s Day to strong, intelligent, talented and simply wonderful women of this world.

Don’t you ever forget that you are loved and appreciated.

This day commemorates August 9 in 1956 when women participated in a national march to petition against pass laws (legislation that required African person’s to carry a document on them to prove that they were allowed to enter a white area).

Imagine over 20 000 women of all races and ages from every corner of South Africa marching towards the Union Buildings in Pretoria?

Lots of them had babies on their backs and some domestic workers brought their white employers’ children with them. Throughout the demonstration, the huge crowd displayed discipline and dignity that were deeply impressive.

Then at Lillian Ngoyi’s suggestion, a masterful tactic, the huge crowd stood in absolute silence for a full half an hour before leaving again in exemplary fashion.

The woman sang Nkosi Sikelel’ Africa without exception. Those who participated in the event described it as a moving and emotional experience.

Every woman’s success should be an inspiration to another that we’re strongest when we cheer each other on.
Life has taught me you are not always in control. Life is full of experiences, lessons, heartbreak, pain and death. But it has also shown me love, beauty, possibility and new beginnings.

Embrace it all. It makes us who we are, and after every storm comes a clear sky.

Nothing is permanent in life, not even the pandemic. It shall pass like water flowing down the river into the sea.
I wish all women in South Africa a happy and successful Women’s Month.

Wathint’ Abafazi, Wathint’ Imbokodo – when you strike a woman you strike a rock.
