The Vink family continues to fight for justice

The Vink family remains hopeful after yet another postponement.

The family of Ludi Vink is still hopeful after another postponement of the case against Daniel Jacobus Olivier and his son, Keith Olivier, who stands accused of the murder of Ludi.

Ludi died in hospital on February 22, 2017, after he was struck in the eye with a pool cue at Mitzy’s Bikers Pub by Daniel Olivier.

During their previous appearance in March, trial dates were set for July but due to the lockdown regulations, there was a backlog in the court.

Olivier and his son reappeared in court on July 28 and 30.

The case, however, was postponed to August 28.

Remaining hopeful

“It has been four years. Four years of not only just grieving but also going to court and seeing the man who took Ludi’s life,” said Anet Vink, Ludi’s stepmother and family spokesperson.

Family and friends will continue to travel from as far as Limpopo to attend court cases.

“We are hopeful and we will remain hopeful. We will continue to fight and we won’t give up. We need justice to be served.

“One can only imagine how difficult it must have been for us as a family as we are not able to close this chapter yet,” she said.

Caught on CCTV

The incident, which took place on February 21, 2017, was caught on CCTV.

The footage shows a fight happening off-camera, where a man is dragged on the floor from the right screen. Ludi then runs across toward the fight in an attempt to break it up and calm the situation.

The next moment, Ludi holds up his hands and steps back into the sight of the camera where Daniel Olivier walks over, grabs a pool cue and thrusts the cue up towards Ludi’s face.

It entered his eye and stayed lodged in his head as he collapsed on the floor.

Daniel then walks away while his son, Keith, runs over to Ludi to pull the pool cue out of his head.

The graphic footage was shared on social media globally.

Ludi was taken to Natalspruit Hospital and was transferred to The Wits Donald Gordon Medical Centre in Johannesburg where he was later declared brain dead. His organs were donated and saved a lot of lives.

Daniel handed himself over to the police in the presence of his attorney on February 24, 2017.

Ludi is mourned by his father, mother, stepmother, two sisters, brother, niece and nephew.
