The latest on Covid-19: Adjusted lockdown level 4 regulations and online registrations planned for local elections

This week, we look at level 4 regulations and how they have impacted various sectors. Also in this week’s round-up, we look at the online registration process planned for the local elections, which are set to take place in October.

Latest Covid-19 regulations

As with every level and adjusted level of lockdown, there is a set of gazetted regulations that citizens need to adhere to. Alert level 4 means you can’t go when and where you want. There are also strict policies in place regarding recreation, hospitality and entertainment.

Several industries affected by latest regulations

While the regulations are in place to ensure the safety and well-being of citizens, some industries are being adversely impacted. The alcohol industry is calling for scientific data to back-up the current sales ban,  while the Restaurant Association of South Africa believes the fourth alcohol ban is unnecessary.

Online registrations planned for municipal elections, amid Covid-19 third wave

July 17–18 have been set aside for the only scheduled voter registration weekend ahead of the 2021 municipal elections, and with the country in the grip of a devastating third wave of Covid-19 infections, the Electoral Commission of South Africa hopes that a new online registration system for first-time voters will be in place by then. Increased demand for hospital beds
