City of Ekurhuleni responds to recent power outages

The City of Ekurhuleni has responded following power outages that hit Alberton in the previous week.

Following continuous power outages, which went on throughout the week, the City of Ekurhuleni (CoE) has finally responded.

They have assured ratepayers that technicians are hands-on.

Areas severely affected by the outages included Raceview, New Redruth, Alberton North, Verwoerdpark and areas of Brackendowns and Brackenhurst.

The outages also sparked frustration as many residents took to the streets demanding answers and accountability from those responsible.

However, Zweli Dlamini of the CoE, said the outages were a combination of failing electrical equipment, cable faults, tampering, vandalism, theft and load-shedding.

“Eskom load-shedding was applied on bulk intake substation level across the City. The strain on the electrical network during load-shedding switching operations is enormous. Oil-filled circuit breakers, transformers and cable joints are prone to failure when loads are frequently switched,” he said.

Dlamini assured that technicians are working on critical repairs on the 33kV network to stabilise supply.

“Updates are done on social media platforms to councillors and the call centre. Customers can look for communication from the department on the City’s social media platforms or may contact the relevant ward councillor,” he said.
