Hit-and-run incident leaves family distraught

A distressed Alberton North mother seeks any information from the community following a hit-and-run that occurred on May 20.

An Alberton North single mother, Shaleen Sooknunan, is left with about R7 000 worth of bills after her son, Dante Singh, was knocked over by a car.
On his way back home, while crossing the road at the corner of Piet Retief Street and Van Riebeeck Avenue with his bicycle, the 11-year-old was knocked over.
Despite reportedly having the right of way, a female driver in her late 30s, driving a white four-door Fiat, knocked the youngster over.
All that Singh could remember was waking up in a hospital bed covered with machines.
The incident left him with a concussion, a severely swollen back, head injury and endless pains on his right hip. The Alberview Primary School Grade Five learner has since missed four days of schooling due to the incident.

Turn of events
“When I got there, I was in a panic. The lady that knocked him over was frantic, screaming at me about who was going to fix her windscreen. She wanted me to pay the windscreen and her trauma bills. My son said he saw her, but she didn’t stop and it was his turn to go,” said Sooknunan.
The mother told the RECORD that the driver admitted to not seeing him at all and hitting him with her car.
Sooknunan said due to the incident, she has encountered financial losses, which she believes she is not liable for.
“During this incident, I happened to drop my cellphone with which I took pictures of the lady’s car and number plate. I still have to take my son for check-ups and in total, these costs will sum up to about R7 000, which I don’t have,” said Sooknunan.
She also confirmed that this was a hit-and-run as the female driver has not come forward nor reported the matter to the Alberton SAPS.
She appealed to any witnesses who were present during the incident and who may have any information to contact her on 072 347 5272.
