Residents declare war with a protest at the circus

Protesters will be protesting outside of Circus in Alberton

ALBERTON – Beauty without cruelty will be holding a protest against wild animals used in circus’s at the corner of Swartkoppies and Lincoln roads, General Alberts Park on April 12 at 13:00.

This group also protested with the Circus’ visit to Alberton in 2013 and they are expecting an evening of bigger support this year with the hope that up to 200 people will join them on Saturday.

According to a spokesperson and one of the organisers of the protest, they are more focused on creating awareness about cruelty against animals this year, and they also secured a permit for their protest.

  1. Pathetic, you people protest the circus cause of live animal, do you not remember when you were young & going to the circus was the best thing ever to see animals that we would normally not get to see, instead of declaring war on the state of Alberton & the muncipality that does nothing at all to rectify the situation. You people are pathetic get a life and stop pushing the last of the smiles away.

  2. Rob what about the smiles on the animals faces – do you see any smiles? No only on self centered ignorant audience faces do I see smiles. Did you watch the abuse of the elephants by this particular circus on Carte Blanche? An you still ok with it?? Disgusting

  3. Only ignorant people would believe the life of an animal in the circus is a good one…. did none of the residents in Alberton watch Carte Blanche in April last year to see what these same Boswells did to the elephants… why is it there are no more wild animals??? because they are not allowed to have them… have anyof you been to the sorry place call the Zoo and Lion Park in PMB to see how sad the animals are there… and oh yes, Brian Boswell owns that too… or do people just not cared cos they do not make the effort to reseach these mongers of animal pain and suffering….????

  4. As one of the organisers of this protest, we never expect to have the support of every person who becomes aware of our campaign. We believe that animals belong in as natural an environment as possible where their rights as sentient beings are respected and upheld. This is not the environment a circus provides and we will be the voice for the voiceless. We will continue to stand for the rights of animals everywhere and work to bring about a ban on animals used in circuses as has been passed in many many countries across the globe.

  5. Rob, the suffering of animals should never put a smile on the face of any human. Instead of attacking those who speak for the animals (because when the animals speak, no-one listens), why not educate yourself a little on what these creatures have to go through so you can have a laugh? Times have changed, and so should we. Google the animals you want to see, find out more about their behaviour, their social structures, etc. This will educate you ~ not the circus.

  6. Please cover more about the circus protest in Alberton. Perhaps you can do more research into the methods employed to train wild animals. Thank you for mentioning the protest

  13. Well done to all the Protesters in Alberton! We cannot stop fighting to end this life of torture for animals! You buy a ticket you support this abuse for these animals! And Rob all I remember about the circus as a child was the lions growling at the trainer and that whip crackling at the elephants and lions! I hated it, my memories of circuses are not at all pleasant! I will never take my young kids to circuses! I and all their teachers and school are against it! In fact my kids tell me how monsters take a animals in cages in the circus! From a 4 yr old! Set them free, and end these heinous crime!

  14. Beauty Without Cruelty’s campaign ‘Ban Animal Trading’ is against the use of any animals in circuses. Circus animals lead unnatural lives of confinement, travelling, training and performing on command.
We would like to see circuses evolve in South Africa, in line with global trends, to discard the medieval use of animals and to celebrate amazing human artistic skills, as seen in the popular Cirque de Soleil.
We will continue to demonstrate to create public awareness of the plight of animals in circuses.
This is a campaign against the exploitation of all animals for profit and entertainment purposes and not a personal attack on Brian Boswell Circus, which currently has no wild animals on site – although no official statement has been made on the use or fate of the many wild animals housed off-site.
The show does include horses, ponies, dogs, goats and many more. Animals in circuses spend about 11 months of the year travelling, for thousands of hours, over long distances. They may be chained or caged while not performing, transported in vehicles that lack climate control and forced to stand or lie in their own waste.
“Ban Animal Trading” calls on all South Africans to support animal-free circuses that provide compassionate fun for the whole family.

  15. Rob, using animals forced to live in small cages, destined to jump and entertain to their masters’ commands and bidding on a daily basis, with proof of mistreatment and abuse on tape, is not something that should put a smile on any person’s face, let alone a child’s. “Us people” are not pathetic, but actually educated, informed and gutsy enough to stand up and speak for the voiceless. These sentient beings were not put on earth to entertain you with cheap ytricks or to line their masters’ pockets with greediness and fools gold. Take a look at what you find entertaining……..I would worry if I were you. Good people of Alberton, think about what you show your children as the norm if you take them to see the circus- chained and barred animals stooped to a level where they are forced to perform petty little tricks to the crack of a whip. Rather opt to show them a National Geographic 3D show of those animals in their natural habitat- you will teach them so much more and enjoy the journey yourself :)

  16. Alberton people – we need to ask why this land is continually rented out in support of cruelty and slavery?
Can we get some kind of petition going to stop this?
