Ward 38 councillor honours February community champions

Six members of the Alberton community have been honoured for the contribution they make in the community.

They were honoured as part of the My Ward 38 Community Champions, which was introduced by Ward 38 councillor Malcolm Maifala-Masebe in line with International Mandela Day in July.

For the first time since July, Maifala-Masebe said the My Ward 38 Community Champion initiative will see six members of the community honoured.

“This follows an overwhelming response to nominating individuals who have excelled in putting the needs of the community first. The community champions for February are Zanelle Huyzer, Despina Kandralidis, Christella George and Alberton councillors,” he said.

Zanelle Huvzer is said to be running a project for abused women and children.

“This includes packing bags for them with toiletries, a toy or a gift that she sponsors to Pixie Pink, a victim advocate who assists the vulnerable little people who cannot fend for themselves. Despina Kandralidis was nominated for the excellent work by being caring and passionate in all she does for animals,” he said.

Kandralidis reportedly goes the extra mile in doing jumble sales for Animal Protection Network and asks nothing in return.

Maifala-Masebe then told the RECORD Christella George has a beautiful heart and soul.

“She is the owner of Savvanna George Charity Shop and an active member of the Brackendowns CPF and plays an important part in the community. She also looks after the poor and abused women and children,” he said.

He announced that Alberton councillors Tiaan Kotzé, Marina van Wyk and alderman Bruna Haipel are honoured for all they do for the community.

“The community has expressed the gratitude they have in taking a stand in the community for going up and above the call of duty amid service delivery collapse. I also encourage the community to nominate their community champions,” said Maifala-Masebe.

To nominate a champion, send an email to Maifala-Masebe at malcolm.maifala@ekurhuleni.gov.za

Nominations should go with the name and surname of the person nominated, the motivation as to why they are nominated and the contact details of the nominee.
