Alberton couple still waiting for borders to open

Anika and Christiaan Potgieter celebrated their first wedding anniversary on March 14.

She and her high school sweetheart, Christiaan, got married on March 14, 2019, at Cradle Valley Guesthouse in Muldersdrift, but the couple’s honeymoon plans to India had to be rescheduled due to the national lockdown.

The RECORD wrote about the couple on April 6 last year.

Honeymoon to India on hold

All their bags were packed, and they were ready to go.

“Everything on my list was ticked off as there were a few very important items to take with me when travelling to India. Most of my planning and time went into our honeymoon, and in a blink of an eye everything just changed,” said Anika.

“We were supposed to visit India from March 15 to April 2, but due to restrictions not only in South Africa but also in India, it was impossible to go.

“Our travel agent told us that we were going to lose our travel insurance because it does not cover the coronavirus and we had to pay a cancellation fee of R7 000 per person.”

They were told that they can move the trip to September of last year, but again none of the countries borders was open for travelling.

“We then got a voucher valid till September 2021.”

According to the couple, their honeymoon is going to cost them more than it was supposed to due to it being a new year with new prices and they still have to pay for their flights.

“You can’t make any final plans as everything is so unpredictable at this stage, but we are still looking forward to our vacation in India,” the couple said.

First wedding anniversary

The couple went to Makalali Private Game Lodge in Mpumalanga from March 11 to 14 to celebrate their first wedding anniversary.

“We made the best of our time and celebrated not only our one year of marriage but also our 10 years of being in love,” said Anika.
