Impatient doctor nabbed for clocking 178km/h in Alberton

The EMPD arrested two drivers for reportedly ignoring the stipulated speed limit on March 6 in Alberton.

The EMPD arrested two drivers for reportedly ignoring the stipulated speed limit on March 6 in Alberton.

On the day, the EMPD officers arrested a 32-year-old female health practitioner, driving a black Mercedes-Benz for clocking 178km/h.

The doctor, described as being uncooperative, was driving on the N12 freeway along Reading interchange, which is zoned 120km/h.

Kobeli Mokheseng, EMPD spokesperson, said when instructed to stop, the female driver drove off and the speed enforcement team had to call for back-up.

“They gave chase until the driver was cornered on the N12 freeway towards Soweto before Comaro off-ramp. The offender stopped her car in the middle of the freeway,” he said.

As she stopped, Mokheseng said she was fuming and used her cellphone to take video clips of officers without consent, violating their rights.

He said the medical doctor then reported to being late for work and was immediately handcuffed and marched to Alberton Police Station.

In a separate incident, the EMPD Speed Enforcement Unit arrested a 25-year-old Ford Ranger driver for registering 105km/h.

“He was nabbed by officers who were visible on Swartkoppies Road between Vermooten Street and Hennie Alberts, zoned 70km/h. He alleged that with a female passenger, they were late for shopping. The law-breaker was escorted to Brackendowns Police Station,” said Mokheseng.

Both detainees face charges of reckless and negligent driving and are expected to appear in the Palm Ridge Magistrate’s Court soon.

Mokheseng reiterated: “We wish to indicate that as the EMPD we allow members of the community to take pictures or videos of our officers while performing their duties, but there are procedures to follow and consensus is key.”
