Dumping by hawkers kills business

Shop owners in Palmridge, Teebos Street next to the Fire Department, have a big problem with rubbish dumping by hawkers right at the doorstep of their shops.

PALM RIDGE – According to the shop owners, the metro council never cleans the area. One shop owner contacted the RECORD to complain about the rubbish.

“The rubbish dumping is somehow affecting our business. It is smelly and it is inviting lots of rats. We have reported the matter to both the Ekurhuleni Metro Council and our ward councillor, Robert Pienaar, but nothing has been done and the rubbish heap is getting bigger. We are pleading with the council to please resolve this problem,” he said.

Councillor Pienaar reacted by saying: “I am aware of the dumping and the Lungile Mtshale Community Development Plan (CDP) has reported the matter and it will be attended to. But the shop owners must also learn to take responsibility, as we explained to them after the first publication in the RECORD in November 2013. We clean the rubbish but the dumping immediately starts again.”
