Speedster clocks 104km/h in a 60km zone

A woman who locked herself in her car after being caught driving 104km/h in a 60km/h zone was arrested for reckless and negligent driving.

No April fool’s joke – A driver’s melodramatic antics failed to help her from being locked up after she was caught doing 104km/h in a 60km/h zone on the Old Vereeniging road on April 1 at around 07:30.

When the metro police officers pulled over the risk-taker in her charcoal Hyundai i20, the driver locked herself in the vehicle and refused to produce her driving license.

The stoical officers waited patiently while the driver ignored them as she got busy on her cellphone. After sometime, two men arrived on the scene – one claimed to be the father of the suspect and the other claimed to be her attorney.

The “father” created a scene and even went to the extent of threatening the officers with death, while the “attorney” demanded to see the officers’ appointment certificates, the calibration certificate as well as the operator’s certificates.

Subsequent to producing all the documents demanded by the “attorney”, the 36-year-old driver was arrested and a case docket registered at Alberton police station.

The “father” who spewed death threats was let off with only a stern warning by the disciplined metro police officers.

The arrestee was released on a bail of R1 500. She is expected to appear in the Palm Ridge Magistrate’s Court soon to face reckless and negligent driving charges.
