Good Samaritan steps up to fix Silwerkroon washing machines

Ward 106 councillor alderman Bruna Haipel’s plea did not fall on deaf ears as her efforts to have Silwerkroon's washing machines fixed materialised.

Ward 106 councillor alderman Bruna Haipel’s plea did not fall on deaf ears as her efforts to have Silwerkroon’s washing machines fixed materialised.

A good Samaritan, Willie van Wyk of QP Group Transformers and Electrical Motors, has stepped up, using his resources to assist the elderly and committed to fixing washing machines.

This is after Haipel’s many attempts to have the City of Ekurhuleni intervene to have the two Speedqueen top loader washing machines fixed

The residents have reportedly been without functioning washing machines for months on end despite their requests to have them fixed. The elderly residents were said to do their washing in their baths then carried them downstairs to hang them, as the lift was also not operational.

Haipel said she asked for assistance from the community and was overwhelmed by their response.

“I would like to thank each and every one who offered to contribute financially or otherwise. Fortunately, I did not have to collect funds from everyone as one very kind sponsor took it upon himself to get the necessary spare parts and repairs done. Some CoE officials are just not willing to take their responsibilities seriously. I sincerely hope they are ashamed of themselves,” she said.

Willie van Wyk said: “There is no specific reason why we did this. Before we even tried to get sponsors, we had offered to fix it. Sometimes, we forget that at some point in our lives we all have received some help, and the best way to appreciate it will be to help someone else.”

Anne Pelser, who is actively involved in the residence, thanked Van Wyk for his generosity of lending a helping hand.

“He volunteered to have his company assist straight away and pay every repair cost. It wasn’t easy for the residents to do their laundry, especially during winter. It also became a challenge again because of health reasons,” said Pelser.
