PHOTOS: New Redruth’s Fore Park in a degrading state

The DA in Ekurhuleni is calling on the City of Ekurhuleni to take drastic actions in ensuring that Boma Park is properly maintained.

“It is shameful that there are irresponsible people who have absolutely no regard for the environment or for the residents of Alberton.

These individuals have no self-esteem or dignity. If they did have any respect, they would not dirty, degrade and destroy the environment in which they live.”

These are the harsh words from Ward 106 councillor, alderman Bruna Haipel who was inspecting Fore Park with Ward 106 committee members.

She also called upon the City of Ekurhuleni (CoE) to take drastic actions in ensuring that Fore Park is properly maintained.

According to Haipel, the children’s playground, mostly known as Boma Park, is far from what it should be.
She said at least R1-million was spent on upgrading the park, but it was no longer the pride and joy of all who use it.

Upon visiting the park, she was shocked at the high levels of litter scattered across the park. The relaxing area was scattered with broken glass, bottles, paper and rubbish.

“This not only destroys and degrades the environment but also poses severe health risks. As we continue to fight against Covid-19, we need to ensure that our environment is clean and free from litter,” she said.

Haipel said this paves a way for car owners to gain access to the recreational park, which is prohibited by Council. She also strongly discouraged polluting and vandalism at the park. Haipel also told the RECORD that the same situation is found at most Alberton parks, judging from the photographs she received from a Randhart resident.

“This situation must also be attributed to the inefficiency of the Ekurhuleni system. Despite many arguments and requests, my pleas for this park to be fenced were adamantly refused with the excuse that local parks may not be fenced. This park is in a densely populated area,” she said.

In an effort to keep the playground clean, she said they are planning to host a clean-up campaign where the community and other organisations can join in.

The RECORD contacted divisional head for parks department Emmanuel Maphorogo. He assured that they would look into the matter.
