Ekurhuleni licensing department in shambles: DA

"Covid-19 has certainly exacerbated the situation" – DA

The DA said licensing departments in Ekurhuleni are in shambles, as thousands of people have experienced difficulties trying to get services at the various motor vehicle licensing centres across the City.

According to the DA member of the Community Safety Oversight Committee in Ekurhuleni, Wollaston Labuschagne, the organisation has received a number of complaints concerning long queues, offline IT systems and backlash from inefficient and unpleasant staff at the centres.

“The Department of Transport and the Road Traffic Management Corporation launched the NaTIS Online Booking Services prematurely as the implementation has been utterly dismal, particularly in Ekurhuleni, where the City’s glaring inefficiencies have been exposed.

“The Ekurhuleni Licensing Department has always been in shambles, but Covid-19 has certainly exacerbated the situation. It is almost impossible to get a booking slot at any of the driving licence testing centres,” said Labuschagne.

“While frustrated Ekurhuleni residents are facing an array of challenges at licensing centres across the metro, both the ANC appointed mayor, Mzwandile Masina, and the ANC MMC of Community Safety, Frans Moko, have neither intervened, nor provided any leadership or direction on the matter.

“The DA in Ekurhuleni calls for accountability and efficiency in the management of licensing facilities across the metro.”

The Advertiser is still awaiting comment from the metro regarding the situation at licensing departments in the City.
