WATCH: Fire leaves New Market company with millions worth of damages

A New Market-based company, Green Plastic Designs, is left with millions worth of damages after a fire broke out on September 18.

This comes after a fire erupted inside the factory, burning an eight-ton truck, a bakkie, partially damaging a trailer and forklift, as well as equipment. The blaze also destroyed the company’s roof and left the place ruined.

The company has produced products ranging from housing to seating, fencing, children’s playgrounds, and geyser isolation to walkways since 2006.

Ekurhuleni fire services attended the scene with CPS, Sentinel Security, First Help, Fox and members of the EMPD.

A distressed Leon Horn, owner of Green Plastic Designs, told the RECORD the reason for the fire was not known.

“We left around 5.45pm and later received a call that the building was on fire. We have everything on camera, but we don’t know how the fire started. We are not operating, but we will start working in the following week, although not fully operational,” he said.

Horn said they are investigating and trying to get everything back to normal. On behalf of DEMS, Vincent Khoza thanked and commended all stakeholders who were involved in putting out the fire.

“The fire firefighters did a great job in containing the fire to the one unit and fortunately there were no injuries. Wadeville, Thokoza and Zonkezizwe fire stations were on site to assist with firefighting. The cause of the fire is undetermined but investigations are ongoing by codes,” he said.
