"It’s been tough, but we have managed to adapt to the new normal."

It has been a tough journey for schools to reopen to a new normal, and above all to adapt and comply with the regulations to ensure the safety of learners and staff.

The RECORD popped in at Harvest Christian School to find out more about the daily routine at the school. Taryn Clarke spokesperson of the school said their new normal started when the Grade Sevens went back to school.

“When we started with Grade Seven we wanted to see where we need to fix and improve and how are we going to handle other grades when they come back.  “We had to separate the Grade Sevens into three classes to ensure social distancing,” she said.

Taryn said there is a tent at their tennis court where they screen children before they start attending their classes.

“The learners are fine now and they have adapted. Even though it was difficult for them in the beginning they soon got used to how things are being done now and they understand the circumstances.

“When it was time to allow other grades back, they separated groups into attending school on different days.

“We are coping fine and we have also given learners the option to continue with their eLearning online while they stay at home. We have a lot less children who come back than what we have expected. We have less than 50 per cent children that have come back.”

She added, “Most parents have opted for them to stay at home and do the eLearning and they will come back once Covid-19 is down to a minimum.

“Nonetheless, it has been going very well with children at home as well. There is constant communication with the teachers regarding their work, which is sent by their teachers and they have been doing very well.”

Taryn said the applications for next year has been very slow where they are still sitting with only four children whom they have accepted for next year.

“It is not the number we need to keep the school open. We are just praying that the Lord will send people around because we understand that there are schools that have closed down. We don’t know what the future holds, but we are hoping and praying for the best.”
