75th Jackie Gibson Marathon cancelled

Initially, the Jackie Gibson Marathon was supposed to take place on March 29.

Johannesburg Harriers Athletics Club (JHAC) and organisers of Jackie Gibson have cancelled the 75th edition of Jackie Gibson Marathon.

Initially, the race was supposed to take place on March 29. When Covid-19 and lockdown regulations were administered, JHAC took a decision to postpone the race till August 10, hoping they would be in a better and safe environment to host a race.

In light of the above, the race organising committee has taken a decision to cancel the 2020 75th edition of the Jackie Gibson Marathon, together with the half-marathon and the 10km races. Seventy-five years is a huge milestone. They had planned a special race to all their participants, including both the runners and volunteers.

“Due to liquidity reasons, lack of principal sponsorship and concern issues, among other reasons, we are unable to refund all entries. As the organising committee, we are offering all the 2020 entries another opportunity to run the race in 2021.

All the details in this regards will be announced later in the year when we prepare the 2021 edition.

“We thank all the runners for their patience, as it has taken us some time to reach this decision. Thank you to the Central Gauteng Athletics officials for continuing to respond to us as we kept on asking way too many questions. Thank you to everyone who was willing and ready to volunteer to serve all the runners in all our races.

We look forward to working with you next year when we aim to make this race extra special for the runners.
“We appeal to all the runners to do their best to contain the spread of the virus.

Please adhere to all the regulations. Encourage those around you to practice social distancing as well as the hygiene requirements as outlined by the World Health Organisation. Until we meet next year, stay safe, stay healthy, stay home,” said Fezile Mqhayi, chairperson of JHAC.
