Deep hole left open by EMM

The depth of the hole poses a threat to children playing on the property.

IT has by now become a norm and a common sight to see deep open holes dug by Ekurhuleni Metro Council workers and abandoned, even when these holes pose a risk to people.

In November 2013 the owner of 26 Wynkwaardt Street in Little Germiston had a problem with a leaking drain pipe on her properly. The matter was reported and the EMM workers arrived, dug a big and deep hole, repaired the pipe and left the open hole that is three metres from kitchen door.

The owner’s son reported: “The council workers dug the hole and worked on the drain pipe. They just left without a word and never returned. We have reported the matter but nobody ever came to close the hole.”

With the big hole next to the brick wall and the daily soaking rain, damage to the wall is clearly starting to show. It could only be a matter of days or weeks before the brick wall collapses. The depth of the hole poses a threat to children playing on the property.

  1. Ok , the property owner shouldn’t have to , but given the track record of the EMM did they not think to fill the hole themselves.I would if my children or anyone else for that matter were in danger! Surely safety is the priority here , safety first , complain later.
