COVID-19: WATCH – Food relief for needy families in Gauteng

Among those who are making donations are MealSA, Colgate-Palmolive SA and Shell SA.

MEC Panyaza Lesufi receives over 10 000 food packs and other supplies from social partners donates one of the biggest donations to the department during the COVID-19 lockdown.

Acting MEC of Social Development has been reiterating the call to the business community and private individuals to come on board with donations to make sure needy people receive help during the lockdown which was announced by President Cyril Ramaphosa.

This is the central warehouse on 30 Mandy Street in Reuven, South of Johannesburg, where the relief items are received and then distributed to all the regional food banks in Gauteng.

Among those who are making donations are MealSA, Colgate-Palmolive SA and Shell SA.

• The department received donation of 10 000 food packs from Shell SA to be distributed across the province.
• Colgate-Palmolive donated 21 pallets of bath soap, toothpaste, roll on, body lotion, toothpaste, face cloths – to be distributed to the homeless who are in temporary shelters
• MealSA – donated 120 000 bags of mealie meal, which will be delivered in batches of 40 000 per month over three months to qualifying families.
• SANZAF and Operations SA to date has raised R5 Million in donations to procure food for distribution, nutritional energy drinks, blankets, mattresses and toiletries
• Dursot – has donated 720 cans of chakalaka and baked beans

These donations will go a long way in assisting the department in the fight against hunger and restoring the dignity of the most vulnerable people in the province.

The Gauteng hotline is continuing to receive food relief requests to assist families in distress during the lockdown, and such donations will go a long way in responding to the need for government assistance.

“The province has partnered with the three metros – Johannesburg, Tshwane and Ekurhuleni – to coordinate their donations with the province, so as to avoid duplications and double dipping. This will also assist with stretching our resources to reach more people”, concluded MEC Lesufi
