Muslim community restores dignity to cemeteries

They will host their next clean-up campaign on March 1 at Kromvlei Cemetery.

With numerous complaints highlighting the state of Kromvlei Cemetery, members of a Palm Ridge Muslim community have taken it upon themselves to clean the graves of their loved ones.

The organisation, Masjid Quwwatul Islam Burial, took the initiative to conduct cleaning campaigns at Palm Ridge and Kromvlei cemeteries.

They held their first clean-up campaign at Palm Ridge Cemetery in 2019.

During this campaign, which was attended by a hundred members of the Muslim community. They aimed to fill up and shape graves and cut overgrown weeds.

Shuaib Rajah, of Masjid Quwwatul Islam Burial, said the campaigns have proven to be a success and more are to come.

“Through these projects, we get a positive turnout from a diverse crowd. The projects are not meant to overrule respective parties involved in keeping the cemeteries clean, but to assist.

“We try to set an example that even though our loved ones pass away, we still try to restore dignity,” he said.

He said they request permission to carry out these campaigns 30 days before the day of the campaign.

Rashid Rajah, also a member of the organisation, thanked the staff working at the cemetery for their assistance in carrying out the campaigns.
