Brackendowns resident affected by rats due to illegal dumping

Steven Coetzer, a Brackendowns resident, has been adversely affected by illegal dumping outside on the corner of his home.

Steven Coetzer, a Brackendowns resident, has for the past 23 years had to bear illegal dumping next to his home.

Coetzer told the RECORD that the dumping takes place in a veld which borders his property and the rubbish brings with it rats and flies.

He said the situation deteriorated in the past seven years with people dumping rubbish, rubble and trees.

“It is actually appalling at the state in which people have total disregard for themselves and disrespect for others,” he said.

“They once dumped a dead dog here, which caused an unpleasant smell at the time.

“I had to place rat traps inside and outside my property to avoid rats, which are caused by this rubbish.”

Ward 38 councillor Malcolm Maifala encouraged residents to report those seen dumping illegally in public spaces.

“The complainant has to log a complaint to the council and it will be helpful if the complainant has seen those involved in this act.

“They should then send their information to the Ekurhuleni Metro Police Department (EMPD), such as the perpetrator’s vehicle registration number. We discourage any illegal dumping in the community,” he said.

Kobeli Mokheseng, EMPD spokesperson, discouraged illegal dumping and said if a person is found dumping they will be brought to book.

“The community should work with us so that we are able to attend to their complaints.

“Even if there’s no sign that restricts illegal dumping, the ground belongs to the City and if found dumping illegally, a person will be fined,” he said.

He said if the community witnessed illegal dumping they should immediately contact the call centre on 086 054 3000 or on 011 458 0911.

The contact number can also be used to report burst water pipes.
