Suspects were arrested for driving at lightning speeds on the N12 and will all face reckless and negligent driving.

ALBERTON – Speed operation conducted on the morning of January 12 between 05:30 and 09:00 by the EMPD Speed Unit on the N12 East between R59 and Voortrekker turnoff netted six speedsters.

The highest speed recorded was 165 km/h, by a 50-year-old male driver in a Mercedes Benz sedan who cited the reason that he was late for a golf practice. The other five arrestees were clocked at speeds of between 162 and 165km/h in a 120km/h zone.

Charges of reckless and negligent driving were laid against all the speedsters at Alberton Police Station. They were all released after a bail of R500 each and are expected to appear in the Palm Ridge Magistrate’s Court soon.

Meanwhile, on Wednesday January 8 around midday, a 19-year-old driver was arrested in Brackendowns on Kliprivier Road doing a break-neck speed of 174km/h in a 80km/h zone in a BMW sedan.

The reason he used was that his father was injured and he was rushing him home. He will be facing charges of reckless and negligent driving in the Palm Ridge Magistrate’s Court.
