JOHANNESBURG – Who said class outings had to be boring? At Maropeng, the official visitor’s centre for the Cradle of Humankind World Heritage Site.
Learners can experience the centre’s Coolest Class Outings for 2014, which offers not only the theoretical aspects of learning at the Maropeng Visitor Centre but also a full hands-on experience at the world-renowned Sterkfontein Caves.
In addition learners can extend the fun by staying over at the Hominid House at Maropeng which offers comfortable budget accommodation for school, sporting and tour groups.
It sleeps up to 120 people in four dormitories, with two separate rooms available for guides, teachers or leaders. While meals can be served in the public dining area, packed lunches can also be arranged on request for those who prefer a picnic. Sporting equipment is provided for activities like volleyball, table tennis, basketball and mini-cricket. To top it all, a slip and slide can be arranged through Maropeng too.
However, that’s doesn’t mean the educational side of things isn’t just as thrilling. Learners can explore the mysterious nooks and crannies of the Caves, and discover the wonderful world of humankind’s past and future at the interactive Maropeng Visitor Centre, complete with underground boat ride, fun educational displays, real fossils and lots more.
Learners can even choose to participate in other activities such as star gazing, or opt for a specialised tour with a scientist or a fascinating tour to an excavation site.
Resource packs will further enhance the learner’s Cradle experience ensuring the excursion is educational, interactive and fun. The curriculum-linked resource pack is filled with fascinating and practical educational material such as worksheets and suggested activities.
Teachers will be able to prepare learners before their visit and give them follow-up assignments afterwards.
