Sewing at St Therese’s Catholic church

Activity to consider for community of Alberton

The Alberton Centre of Concern sewing classes have been happening for 33 years. Hundreds of people have benefited from attending the classes which take place in St. Therese’s Catholic Church hall every Saturday afternoon.

After many mistakes, the classes now run on oiled wheels. Three teachers have been trained to teach basic skills and they all speak several African languages.

The classes have a set syllabus with patterns on cardboard for children and women of all sizes.

Over the past few years there have been added craft classes to teach knitting, crocheting and embroidery and most popular of all, patchwork. These take place once a month.

If you would like to be part of this project as a supervisor, teacher or student – the founder of the classes and her husband are retiring this year and they are hoping that the classes will continue without them. Please contact Talitha Dingaan on 011 907 8227 or Jenni Bird on 011 867 7760 for more information.

If you have anything you want to donate, contact the numbers above.
